GLIDER ADD-ON PRIVATE / COMMERCIAL RATING 
COURSE SUMMARY

The training program leading to an FAA add-on rating for gliders with Silent Wings Soaring is divided into three phases:

 

Phase I.   Initial Training To Solo – Ground and flight training leading to solo flight in a glider.  A syllabus of 8-10 lessons that covers the material required by Code of Federal Aviation Regulations is provided to guide the instructor and student through the training.  Emphasis is on obtaining flight skills and academic knowledge that will lead to a solo endorsement in the student’s logbook.  Solo endorsement will be provided when the student has demonstrated to the flight instructor a satisfactory level of proficiency, skill, knowledge and completed a pre-solo written exam.  The SGS 2-33 and SGU 2-22 gliders are used for flight training.

 

Phase II.   Post Solo and Single Seat Checkout – Post solo flight training to gain experience and proficiency in all flight maneuvers and practice thermaling skills. Spin entry and recovery training prior to single seat checkout.  Complete single seat checkout in the SGS 1-26 glider to expand body of flight experience and knowledge. Spin training required for single seat checkout.   Solo flight closely observed by flight instructor and post flight critiques provided.   Student flys under varying wind and weather conditions to build confidence and experience.  Flying required number of flights and hours to meet FAA experience requirements for the Private or Commercial Rating.  Minimum CFR requirements for the Private Rating are 10 solo flights and 3 hours of flight time.  Minimum CFR requirements for the Commercial Rating are 20 solo flights and 3 hours of flight time.  Refer to CFR 61.129.

 

Phase III.  Complete FAA Flight Requirements, Prepare For Oral Exam and Practical Test, Obtain FAA Glider Pilot Rating (Private Or Commercial) – Log required training to meet FAA requirements.  Flight experience for the commercial rating is greater than the private rating.  Complete 3 preparatory flights with an instructor within 60 days of FAA Practical Test.  Prepare for oral exam portion of Practical Test by completing one-day intensive review using FAA PTS booklet as a study guide.  Successfully complete FAA Practical Test and receive FAA Private or Commercial Pilot Glider add-on rating.

 

Progress in this training program is dependent upon frequency of training, appropriate weather and equipment availability.  Fees and charges for flight instruction, ground instruction, glider rental, instructional materials, test preparation, FAA testing and evaluation are in effect.  Prices are subject to change without notice.
